Head coach Rob Senderoff and the Kent State Golden Flashes have made a major splash in the transfer portal, securing a commitment from East Tennessee State guard Jaylen Smith. The move, made official this week, brings an elite playmaker and proven winner to the Mid-American Conference.
Smith arrives in Kent with a decorated resume, most recently being named the Southern Conference Sixth Man of the Year. Known for his versatility and high basketball IQ, Smith averaged 10.6 points per game last season. However, it’s his vision that has Flashes fans excited; two seasons ago, he led the entire SoCon in assists, proving he can both score and facilitate at a high level.
“Jaylen is a dynamic guard who fits our culture perfectly,” said the Kent State coaching staff. “He’s a winner who knows how to impact the game in multiple ways, whether it’s getting to the rim or setting up his teammates.”
The timing of Smith’s commitment is crucial for the Flashes. With the departure of assist leader Cian Medley to East Carolina, Kent State had a glaring hole at the point. Smith’s ability to handle pressure and orchestrate the offense makes him the projected frontrunner to lead the backcourt for the 2026-27 season.
Smith is the fourth portal addition for Kent State this month, joining a physical frontcourt haul that includes Cameron Williams (Portland), Latif Diouf (UT Chattanooga), and Godslove Nwabude (Eastern Michigan).
As the Golden Flashes look to rebound from a 17-17 campaign and return to the top of the MAC, the addition of a veteran leader like Smith provides a veteran spark that could be the difference-maker in Cleveland next March.
