Official Bowl Predictions
Joey Keller, Q92 Sports Intern
College Football season is finally here! It feels like an eternity since Georgia raises the College Football Playoff trophy back in January, but alas, we have arrived. There are plenty of new faces, names that many have never heard of that they will soon never forget. There will be bands playing, cheerleaders dancing, and students packing stadiums all across America. This offseason has been one unlike any other, with the transfer portal being overrun thanks to NIL, a coaching carousel that saw beloved coaches leave overnight, and plenty of smack talk from coaches, players, and fans. This year there are over 40 bowl games, so take a look and see where your team could be playing come December or January. The 2022 season is finally here, so buckle up and enjoy one of America’s greatest traditions: college football.
Hometown Lenders Bahamas Bowl
Thomas Robinson Stadium, Nassau Bahamas
FAU (6-6) vs Western Michigan (6-6)
If only this game was a few years ago. Lane Kiffin vs PJ Fleck. However, the Lane Train took off for Ole Miss, while Fleck rowed his boat to Minnesota. WMU hasn’t seen the same levels of success as they did with Fleck, but his replacement, Tim Lester has yet to record a losing season in his five years at the helm, and last year led the Broncos to their first bowl win since 2015. FAU hasn’t had as smooth of a transition, with the former failed Florida State coach Willie Taggart recording just a 10-11 record in his Owl tenure.

Tailgreeter Cure Bowl
Exploria Stadium, Orlando, Florida
Louisiana (10-3) vs Liberty (8-4)
This game features two of the Group of Five teams with the biggest shoes to fill. The Cure Bowl has become a home away from home for the Flames, with Head Coach Hugh Freeze leading Liberty to back to back Cure Bowl victories in 2019 and 2020, plus a LendingTree Bowl. However, the prodigal son of Malik Willis is gone to bigger and better things in the NFL and Freeze must figure out his replacement. For Louisiana, they have been led to four straight bowl games (and three straight wins) under coach Billy Napier, but he is now riding a fan boat through the Everglades with the Florida Gators. It will be up to the hometown kid Michael Desormeaux in his first stint as a head coach to keep up the standard Napier set.
Series History: Louisiana leads 2-0 (Last Meeting: 2021)
Wasabi Fenway Bowl
Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
Virginia Tech (7-5) vs Cincinnati (8-5)
Another team with a first year head coach is Virginia Tech with former Penn State DC Brent Pry left to pick up the pieces of his predecessor Justin Fuente’s collapse. Fuente’s tenure started promisingly, but by the end of his almost six years, the program continued to slide and saw their legendary streak of 29 straight bowl games come to an end. With a weak ACC Coastal division, Pry should be able to get the Hokies to a bowl game, if not more. For Cincinnati, coach Luke Fickell is left with even more questions. Stars Desmond Ridder, Sauce Gardner, and Jerome Ford are all gone and the American has gotten even tougher with UCF, Houston and East Carolina ready to compete for the conference.
Series History: Tied 6-6 (Last Meeting: 2018)
PUBG Mobile New Mexico Bowl
University Stadium, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Boise State (10-3) vs UTEP (7-5)
This matchup would almost certainly never happen, as these two teams meet September 23 in El Paso. If it did, it would certainly be a fun matchup. UTEP is led by fifth-year Head Coach Dana Dimel who has completely turned the program around. After starting 5-27 overall and just 1-19 in conference play in his first three years, the Miners went 7-5 last season before a close loss to Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl. For the Broncos, second year coach Andy Avalos will look to elevate the program back to the level that former coaches Chris Peterson and Bryan Harsins established in their tenures. Boise State will hope to be back in a bowl again this year, after having to bow out of the Barstool Bowl this past December due to COVID.
Series History: Boise State leads 6-0 (Last Meeting: 2021)
Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl
Sofi Stadium, Inglewood, California
Arizona State (7-5) vs Fresno State (11-2)
Another great matchup between the G5 and Power 5 will be the LA Bowl in what would be a rematch of the 2017 Sun Bowl. Despite coach Kalen DeBoer leaving for Washington after just two seasons, Fresno State is once again led by the fearless QB Jake Haener, who many see as a dark horse NFL prospect. That alone makes Fresno State a contender for the Mountain West title. For Arizona State, Herm Edwards is certainly on the hot seat, as his coaching tenure has been riddled with mediocrity and rumors of NCAA violations. Florida transfer Emory Jones is likely QB1 to start the season and having experience playing in the SEC will certainly serve in his favor.
Series History: Arizona State leads 3-1 (Last Meeting: 2018)
LendingTree Bowl
Hancock Whitney Stadium, Mobile, Alabama
Arkansas State (6-6) vs Mississippi State* (5-7)
Arkansas State is now in year two with former Tennessee HC Butch Jones, who took over for Blake Anderson when he left for Utah State. Anderson was there for seven years after the three year stretch of Hugh Freeze-Gus Malzahn-Bryan Harsins, leading the Red Wolves to six straight bowl game appearances. Jones was able to land a trio of linebackers in the portal which should help improve the team from their 2-10 record last year. Mississippi State will have another season of Will Rogers under center, who showed signs of improvement throughout last season. The problem for third year coach and fan-favorite Mike Leach is the Bulldogs play in the toughest division in college football and simply don’t have the firepower to keep up with the top dawgs of the SEC.
Series History: Mississippi State leads 15-0-1 (Last Meeting: 1994)
SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl
Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada
Tennessee (6-6) vs Washington (8-4)
This has to be the fourth or fifth straight year of hearing “Tennessee is Back.” However, at this point, it has turned into the “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Josh Heupel did lead the Vols back to a bowl game last year and has made noise on the recruiting trail, but fans on Rocky Top will likely have to wait a couple more years before dreaming of double digit wins or taking on the likes of Alabama. Washington brings in new head coach Kalen DeBoer after the mess that was Jimmy Lake, with hopes of returning to the New Year’s 6 and College Football Playoff. They will have to find fresh blood at CB, after both Trent McDuffie and Kyler Gordon were drafted in the first two rounds of the draft. The Huskies are likely to be led under center by former Indiana standout Michael Penix Jr.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl
Toyota Stadium, Frisco, Texas
Utah State (6-6) vs SMU (6-6)
Last season went about as well as anyone could have hoped for Blake Anderson in his first season in Logan. The challenges will be upped this season, as the Aggies must travel to Tuscaloosa Week 2, a Thursday night primetime matchup at BYU, and a trip across the Pacific against Hawaii. For SMU, Sonny Dykes was the only Mustang coach with a record above .500 since the infamous Death Penalty in the late ‘80s, but he went across town to coach at TCU. Former SMU OC Rhett Lashlee is now back in Dallas as the head man after spending two seasons down in Coral Gables. Lashlee was able to pick up some key commits in the portal for QB Tanner Mordecai to work with, including three 3-Star wide outs and former 4-Star Alabama running back Camar Wheaton.

Myrtle Beach Bowl
Brooks Stadium, Conway, South Carolina
Appalachian State (10-3) vs UAB (9-4)
The teal turf down in Myrtle Beach could easily be the site of the one of the best G5 bowl games this winter. With back to back 9-plus win seasons, a Sun Belt championship appearance, and two bowl games, Shawn Clark could very well follow in the footsteps of the previous two head coaches at App State to take a Power 5 coaching job this offseason (Scott Satterfield, Louisville and Eliah Drinkwitz, Missouri). After bouncing between Clemson and Duke, QB Chase Brice has found a home in Boone, NC and is poised for another run with the Mountaineers. Expect the Sun Belt East to be a heavyweight battle royale, but App State has been there time and time again and can certainly find themselves on top of that mountain again. For UAB, coach Bill Clark has never had a losing season in his six seasons, including five bowl games bids, and two CUSA championships. With a depleted CUSA after multiple schools departed, look for UAB to once again compete for the conference championship.
Series History: Appalachian State leads 1-0 (Last Meeting: 2019)
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Albertsons Stadium, Boise, Idaho
San Jose State (7-5) vs Toledo (9-3)
The Idaho Potato Bowl may not feature big name teams anymore like Clemson, Miami, or Georgia Tech, but it will always be iconic for multiple reasons, whether it’s playing on the blue turf, or watching the winning coach get showered by a bucket full of potato wedges. In this year’s matchup, Toledo is bowl eligible for the eight straight season (not selected in 2019 or 2020) and looking for their first bowl victory since 2015. Salem native and Mount Union alum Jason Candle has never had a sub-500 record in his six years since taking over for current Iowa State and Stark County product Matt Campbell. He will look to continue that streak this season, while also aiming for Toledo’s first MAC championship since 2017. For San Jose State Head Coach Brent Brennan, he seems to be in a completely different situation. Outside of SJSU’s Mountain West in 2020 that some have labeled as a “COVID fluke,” Brennan has a combined 13-36 record overall and 7-25 conference record. With his job on the line and QB Nick Starkel now in the NFL, the Spartans will be a curiosity to watch. Both teams could certainly be interesting, with Candle looking for a Power 5 job offer, and Brennan fighting for his career.
Series History: Toledo leads 1-0 (Last Meeting: 2019)
RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl
FAU Stadium, Boca Raton, Florida
Colorado State (6-6) vs Northwestern (6-6)
Despite making a bowl game, a 6-6 record and invitation to the Boca Raton Bowl this certainly isn’t what Northwestern fans would be hoping for out of their Wildcats and Coach Pat Fitzgerald. It also likely would not be enough for Fitz to be fired, as he is a Chicago native and Northwestern alum who is only halfway through his massive ten year contract extension. The problem is that Northwestern has seemed to be stuck in complacency as of late. In 2015, they went 10-3, but only won 7 games the next year. In 2017 and 2018 they combined for a record of 19-8 and a B1G West title, but won three games in 2019. 2020 was the same story, as they once again won the West and took Ohio State down to the wire in the championship game, but followed it up with another three win season last year. It makes predicting this year’s team seemingly impossible, but with Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa all expected to improve in the West, the Wildcats find themselves behind the 8-Ball. Colorado State should be a fun team to watch this season with new Head Coach Jay Norvell bringing his air raid offense to Fort Collins. Norvell led Nevada to four straight bowl games with the help of the now pro Carson Strong, before leaving Reno this past offseason. The Rams may not be at the summit of the Mountain West right off the bat, but bowl eligibility is certainly attainable.

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Caesars Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana
Coastal Carolina (10-2) vs UTSA (10-3)
Along with the Myrtle Beach Bowl, the Superdome will feature one of the best Group of 5 bowl games. Coastal Carolina has been one of the nation’s favorite teams over the past few years, and has seen unprecedented success since joining the FBS in 2017. Some are slightly surprised that Head Coach Jamey Chadwell is still in Myrtle Beach after plenty of rumors of him being offered Power 5 jobs the past couple years. Coastal has 22 wins over the past two years and played in back to back thrilling Cure Bowls, including their last second win over NIU last year. Along with his coach, star QB Grayson McCall is back for a third year after breaking the single season passer rating record and declining to enter the NFL Draft. UTSA enters year three with Jeff Traylor in charge and has a lot to be excited about. In his first two years, Traylor has led the Roadrunners to back-to-back bowl games and a conference championship, both being firsts in school history. With CUSA losing Marshall, plus two others, UTSA seems like the runaway favorite in the conference. The Roadrunners will be fun to watch, and the best ticket at the Alamodome since the Spurs left in 2002.
Series History: No Previous Matchups
Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl
Amon G. Carter Stadium, Fort Worth, Texas
James Madison** (6-5) vs Kansas State* (5-7)
With the amount of bowl games that exist in college football, there are always going to be teams playing in a bowl that many believe should not be there. James Madison is at an automatic disadvantage as a transition team. Not only must they win at least six games, but they only play eleven, and have to hope that there are not enough eligible teams to fill all the slots. Kansas State enters the fourth year of the Chris Klieman era, which many see as a make or break year. Kansas State isn’t necessarily a bad team, but with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, and improved Texas and West Virginia teams, it’s hard to see K-State in the top half of the Big 12 standings. With Skylar Thompson gone to the NFL, it will be Nebraska transfer super senior Adrian Martinez under center, as he looks to capitalize on a new opportunity and coach.
Series History: No Previous Matchups
Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl
Independence Stadium, Shreveport, Louisiana
Army (7-5) vs Memphis (7-5)
Army signed an agreement back in 2019 that stated they would play in the Independence Bowl for three out of the next six years they are bowl eligible. Since then, they have been bowl eligible twice and have yet to appear in the Independence Bowl, so it is safe to assume that this year they will make an appearance in Shreveport. The Black Nights of West Point have been bowl eligible five of the past six years under Jeff Monken with four bowl wins along the way. Monken has coached consistently during his tenure, with little roster turnover, so it seems quite likely they would be bowl eligible with the Independence Bowl being the most likely destination. Memphis enters their third year with Ryan Silverfield in the post-Mike Norvell era. After a solid first year and Montgomery Bowl win, the Tigers lost their chance to win a second straight bowl game when the Hawaii Bowl was canceled at the last minute. After becoming the first true freshman in school history to win the starting QB to start the season, Seth Henigan played well considering his age and will look to build on a successful first season.
Series History: Memphis leads 4-1 (Last Meeting: 2002)
Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl
Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida
Houston (10-2) vs Stanford (6-6)
Houston will have the challenge of replacing their top two cornerbacks and star edge rusher Logan Hall, but will have another season of QB Clayton Tune and WR Nathaniel Dell to carry the offense. Both are on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, among other trophies and accolades, and have built a great chemistry throughout the past. Houston was also named the preseason favorite in the American by the slimmest of margins over Cincinnati and UCF. After losing their opener to Texas Tech, Houston would win eleven straight before falling to Cincy in the conference championship and bouncing back with a bowl win over Auburn. This could be the end of the road for David Shaw at Stanford. After making a bowl game in each of his first eight years that included four New Years 6 bowls and five top 12 finishes, Shaw and the Cardinal have won just eleven games over the past three years. Luckily for Shaw, his team will be led by the 22-year old true junior QB, Tanner McKee, who many believe could be a future NFL first round pick.

EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl
Clarence T. C. Ching Athletics Complex, Honolulu, Hawaii
Hawaii (7-6) vs Charlotte (6-6)
May we never forget the tragedy that struck the college football world last Christmas, when the Hawai’i Bowl was canceled hours before kickoff. While we didn’t get a game, the social media team for the game certainly kept us entertained throughout the night. This year, the game will be played, with unofficial host University of Hawai’i once again participating. Leading the Rainbow Warriors is former legendary hometown QB Timmy Chang, who takes over after the tumultuous tenure of former coach Todd Graham. For Charlotte, they enter year four under Head Coach Will Healy. After a winning record and Bahamas Bowl victory in his first year, the 49ers would have back to back losing seasons the past two years. The biggest storyline for the team though is off the field, as the school will move from CUSA to the American after this season. With an all-time 18-34 record against CUSA opponents, this will be the Niners last year to make a statement in the conference.

Quick Lane Bowl
Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan
Purdue (7-5) vs Northern Illinois (9-4)
Do not let the record fool you. We all know that Purdue is fully capable of, and will most likely pull off a top ten upset this year. However, the Spoilermakers often play to the level of their competition, and with a weak B1G West division, they always find themselves dropping games to teams like Illinois or Nebraska, hence the 7-5 record here. The biggest challenge may be replacing star receiver David Bell, who is now up in Berea with the Browns. For NIU, last year went about as well as they could’ve hoped after a winless season in 2020. After being picked dead last in preseason media poll, the Huskies went down to Atlanta and upset the Ramblin Wreck of Georgia Tech, and mostly ran through the MAC, capped off by their dominating revenge win over Kent State in the MAC championship game. The Huskies fell just short of a Cure Bowl victory against a great Coastal Carolina team, but have plenty of momentum heading into 2022. The script is now flipped, as NIU is picked as the conference favorite for this season, but Head Coach Thomas Hammock and his squad should have another great run of success this campaign.
Series History: Northern Illinois leads 2-0 (Last Meeting: 2013)
TaxAct Camellia Bowl
Cramton Bowl, Montgomery, Alabama
Eastern Michigan (7-5) vs Troy (6-6)
Eastern Michigan has seen some consistency the past few years under Head Coach Chris Creighton, having led the Eagles to four bowl game appearances in the past six years. If this pick is correct, EMU will head down to Alabama during bowl season for a second straight year after getting drummed by Liberty in last year’s LendingTree Bowl. Luckily for EMU, Troy does not have a Malik Willis on their team. In his eight years, Creighton has yet to lead the Eagles to a bowl win, with their last and only bowl win coming in 1987. After three straight years with bowl victories, Neal Brown left Troy to sing Country Roads at WVU, and his replacement was not able to keep the streak going. After being a finalist to replace Brown three years ago, Jon Sumrall was chosen to take over this time around, after leading a stout Kentucky defense as Co-DC. With a fresh face in the locker room and great defensive mastermind, Troy should be able to sneak into a bowl game.
Series History: No Previous Matchups
Servpro First Responder Bowl
Gerald J. Ford Stadium, Dallas, TX
Air Force (6-6) vs BYU (6-6)
Former conference rivals in the WAC, BYU and Air Force played just about every year from 1981 to 2010, but have not played since. As is normal for the service academies, Air Force is good enough to be a bowl team, but not likely to be in the national spotlight. They put together an impressive campaign last year, finishing 10-3 with a win over Louisville in the First Responder Bowl. After being taken in the 6th round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, Jordan Jackson became the ninth Air Force player to be drafted. Head Coach has brought stability and a half-dozen bowl wins in his tenure in Colorado Springs, which is why the airmen seem like a safe choice for a bowl selection. For BYU, they are often one of the hardest teams to predict in the preseason. The roster turnover rate is higher than any other school, along with always having the oldest roster in the nation due to many students participating on mission trips. The one thing that does not change is Kalani Sitake is still the head coach. Sitake has led BYU to back to back double digit win seasons the past two years, and five bowl games in his six seasons. The cougars have lost plenty of talent to the pros the last few years, including star QB Zach Wilson who plays with a different type of cougars now, but Sitake has been able to replace talent and reload before, so he should be able to do it enough to sneak BYU into a bowl game
Series History: BYU leads 24-7 (Last Meeting: 2010)
TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl
Protective Stadium, Birmingham, Alabama
Oregon State* (5-7) vs Nevada* (5-7)
Just like the Armed Forces Bowl, this is another game with teams that are just here to fill the slots. Nevada lost star QB Carson Strong, who shockingly went undrafted, along with his top two weapons and even Head Coach Jay Norvell who took over at Colorado State. After spending 23 years as an assistant coach at Nevada, plus almost a decade at Oregon and Washington State, Ken Wilson now takes over the program, looking to keep their four year bowl streak alive. After starting his head coaching career 9-22 in his first three years, Oregon State Head Coach Jonathan Smith saved his job with a 7-6 record and appearance in the LA Bowl last year. The problem for the Beavers is that many other teams in the PAC12 improved, whether it be coaching upgrades at Oregon or Washington, a high recruiting class at Utah, or half of Norman, OK moving to Southern Cal.
Series History: Oregon State leads 3-1 (Last Meeting: 2018)
Guaranteed Rate Bowl
Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
Penn State (7-5) vs TCU (6-6)
It feels like James Franklin has been to the highest of highs and the lowest of lows so far at Penn State. Franklin has led his teams to 10 bowl games in his 11 years as a head coach, which includes a Rose Bowl appearance and Cotton and Fiesta Bowl wins Franklin may no longer has a Saquon Barkely or Trace McSorely, but with consistent competitive recruiting classes, the Nittany Lions still have a lot to be hopeful for. But with Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan holding strong in the B1G East, it’s going to take a lot more than an annual white out and Kernkraft to be a top team in the country. After almost 21 years, TCU will be led by someone other than Gary Patterson, who led the Horned Frogs to 17 bowl appearances, including a Rose and Peach Bowl victory. It’s the Sonny Dykes show now, as he makes a short commute from Dallas to Fort Worth. TCU has seen plenty of success in the past decade, and has an opportunity to take the next step in the coming years with the upcoming departures of Texas and Oklahoma. For now, expect somewhat of a transition year, but Dykes has the experience and there’s enough talent for the Frogs to be bowl eligible this upcoming season.
Series History: Penn State leads 3-1 (Last Meeting: 1978)
Military Bowl presented by Peraton
Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium, Annapolis, Maryland
East Carolina (8-4) vs Marshall (9-3)
This game would be a match made in heaven for old-timer college football fans, with the teams having a historic, but respectful rivalry with one another ever since the tragic Marshall plane crash of 1970. The teams became conference rivals in the Conference USA, until ECU left for the American in 2014. Maybe this game could even feature some of the theatrics of the 2001 GMAC Bowl, where Marshall came back from a 30 point deficit to beat the Pirates 64-61 in 2OT. Mike Houston has won and made it to the biggest stages for each stop in his coaching career so far, at DII Lenoir-Rhyne, The Citadel, and James Madison. After 3 straight years with only 3 wins each, ECU brought in Houston, who finally got the Pirates to a bowl in year 3, just for it to be canceled hours before due to COVID. Marshall enters another year of change, after last offseason began a new coaching era with Charles Huff replacing Doc Holliday as head coach. This year, it is a new conference, as the Thundering Herd moves from CUSA to the Sun Belt.
Series History: East Carolina leads 11-5 (Last Meeting: 2021)
AutoZone Liberty Bowl
Liberty Bowl, Memphis, Tennessee
Iowa State (6-6) vs Florida (7-5)
Iowa State is in a way, Western Stark County, Ohio at this point. Their Head Coach, Matt Campbell is a Perry High School and Mount Union alum, while his father coached nearby at Jackson. Campbell also coached at Mount Union, along with Toledo and Bowling Green, before heading west to Ames. His Offensive Coordinator, Tom Manning played at Ursuline in Youngstown and also Mount Union, and coached at JHS, Mount, and Toledo. Defensive Coordinator Jon Heacock played at West Branch and Muskingum University, with coaching stops at Steubenville HS, Youngstown State, Kent State, and Toledo. Campbell has the challenge of revamping his offense after star running back Breece Hall and four-year starting QB Brock Purdy were both drafted to the NFL. Florida also enters a new era, with new Head Coach Billy Napier looking to pick up the pieces left by Dan Mullen. Luckily for him, the Gators will be led by Anthony Richardson this season at QB, while last year the QB reps were too often split between “AR15” and Emory Jones. The challenge for the Gators will be a challenging SEC schedule, along with a week 1 matchup against Utah and a Black Friday matchup against Big Brother Florida State.
Series History: No Previous Matchups
TaxAct Texas Bowl
NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas
Auburn (8-4) vs Texas (7-5)
The battle of “second year coaches already on the hot seat.” Bryan Harsin narrowly survived the offseason despite his own boosters scheming everything they could to get him fired. Harsins will have to improve this year, but with eight home games and a weak non-conference schedule, he gets a bit of a boost. Bo Nix has left for Oregon, and Harsins must pick between TJ Finley, who finished out the season for the Tigers last year, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford, and former Texas A&M starter Zach Calzada. It seems to be anyone’s guess who gets the nod at this point, but it can be expected that there is a good chance of split reps this year, after what was seen last season. Steve Sarkisian might be on a hotter seat after going just 5-7, including a loss to Kansas, after starting off ranked in his first year in Austin. Sark has had plenty of scrutiny and controversy in the past, most notably his termination at USC, and he must at the very least be bowl eligible to keep his job for another year. One could argue that his recruiting will give him an extra cushion, which includes landing former #1 recruit, QB Quinn Ewers in the transfer portal, 2023 Top 5 recruit, Arch Manning, and having top 10 recruiting classes for the next three years. At the end of the day there must be improvement on the field, no matter how good the recruiting is, or Sark will be once again out of a job.
Series History: Texas leads 5-3 (Last Meeting: 1991)
New Era Pinstripe Bowl
Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
Indiana (8-4) vs Miami (6-6)
There might not have been a bigger letdown team last year than the Indiana Hoosiers. After a promising 2020 season, Indiana went just 2-10, 7 of which were losses by more than 20 points. Tom Allen now has a healthier team with a strong 2022 recruiting class coming in along with former 4-Star Missouri commit QB Connor Bazelak to replace Michael Pennix. The Hoosiers should certainly improve this year, but it is tough to see them dethroning Ohio State, Michigan State, or Michigan this season. Miami fans have been riding the “We’re Back” train all offseason. Canes fans have already declared QB Tyler van Dyke as the Heisman winner and a first round draft pick, along with Mario Cristobal as the savior of the program. Let’s just pump the brakes for a minute. The Canes must travel to Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, and Clemson this season, along with hosting reigning ACC Champion Pitt and bitter rival Florida State in what many consider to be a neutral venue. With any coaching change, many players left, but Cristobal failed to bring much talent with him from Oregon. Instead, his top running backs chose to go to USC and FSU, along with multiple defenders transferring to Auburn and WR Micah Pittman, brother of NFL star, Michael Pittman Jr., deferring Miami for FSU.
Series History: Tied 1-1 (Last Meeting: 1966)
Cheez-It Bowl
Camping World Stadium, Orlando, Florida
West Virginia (9-3) vs Wake Forest (11-1)
It is a fun new time in Morgantown as JT Daniels looks to lead the Mountaineers back to their winning days. Coach Neal Brown has plenty of tough tests this year, with games at Virginia Tech, the Backyard Brawl, and Oklahoma State. They also face Oklahoma, Baylor, and Texas. Neal Brown must take a step forward in year 4, after back to back 6-win seasons and bowl appearances. While the Cheeze-It Bowl may not be the top of the Mountain that WVU fans hope to one day reach, it is certainly a step in the right direction that will have their faithful singing Country Roads. For Wake Forest, they have to hope to continue the success of last season. After years of struggle and mediocrity, Head Coach Dave Clawson led the Demon Deacons to 11 wins, a division title, Gator Bowl victory, and a top 10 ranking throughout the season. Sam Hartman is possibly the best quarterback in the entire ACC and he will look to build on that this season. Wake will have to take down Clemson and in-state foe, NC State, which it is hard to imagine they will be able to do in the same season, but right now it seems that another double digit wins season would be a massive success in Winston-Salem.
*Written before news of Sam Hartman’s medical leave*

Valero Alamo Bowl
Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas
Oklahoma (10-2) vs USC (9-3)
The bowl selection committee purposely picks matchups that entice viewers and this completely epitomizes that fact. Who wouldn’t love to watch Oklahoma and new Head Coach Brent Venables take on former Head Coach Lincoln Riley and QB Caleb Williams, among many other former Sooners now in LA. Riley and company did not leave on good terms and many in Oklahoma see him as their biggest enemy, so they would certainly love to get revenge right off the bat. Oklahoma lost a lot of players in the transfer portal such as Williams and star receiver Mario Williams to USC and their other former 5-star QB Spencer Rattler to SOuth Carolina. They did retool with players such as QB Dillon Gabriel from UCF, plus another highly ranked recruiting class. The Sooners may not be the only top dawg in the Big 12 anymore, but still have the talent, experience, and a sharp defensive minded coach to compete around the top 10. USC had one of the wildest offseasons any program has seen in recent years. First the aforementioned arrival of Lincoln Riley, a wild roller coaster in the transfer portal, and the news of them joining the Big 10 in the future. While many think the Trojans will be a national contender right off the bat, it is extremely rare to see a team go from a 4-win season to competing for the playoffs. USC must still face the likes of Utah and a much improved UCLA in conference, plus Notre Dame during rivalry week. The Trojans will be much improved, but are likely to be a year or two away.
Series History: USC leads 5-2-1 (Last Meeting: 2005)
Duke’s Mayo Bowl
Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina
Wisconsin (9-3) vs Boston College (8-4)
Ah yes, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. What’s better than getting an entire cooler full of twangy mayonnaise dumped on you after sweating out in the Carolina sun for 4 hours? Probably a lot of things, but either coach would be willing to accept that fate if it means a victory. Wisconsin will always be a safe bet for around 8-10 wins each year, with their stout defense and dominating running game. Their only chance to break out of this consistent purgatory would be if Graham Mertz takes a massive step forward, not just slight improvement. Last year, Mertz had a negative TD-INT ratio, under 2,000 yards and a completion percentage below 60%. To make matters worse, he will have to navigate this year without his top target from last year, TE Jake Ferguson. The rest of the team is good enough to win many of their games, but Mertz must elevate his play against teams like OSU or Minnesota if the Badgers expect to win. Boston College has shown signs of improvement the past two years under Head Coach Jeff Hafley, but has been hit hard with the injury bug. QB Phil Jurkovec will be back and fully healthy to start the season, which is likely the key to their success this season. The ACC Atlantic is much tougher than the Coastal, which adds some tough matchups for the Eagles. An 8-win season would certainly be a step in the right direction for the Eagles, which would be their first since 2009.

Sun Bowl, El Paso, Texas
Clemson (8-4) vs UCLA (11-2)
After six straight years in the playoff, Clemson took a step back last year, yet still managed to win 10 games. In hindsight, they may have been lucky just to reach that. Half of those wins were by just single digits, along with multiple wins marred by controversial officiating. Clemson also lost one of if not the best defensive coordinators in the country, Brent Venables, this offseason, along with OC Tony Elliot, both to head coaching vacancies. The defense must also replace James Skalski, Baylon Spector, Nolan Turner, and Andrew Booth Jr., who have all moved on to the NFL. Another challenge Dabo Swinney must face is the improving ACC, specifically the Atlantic division. NC State and Wake Forest have proven to be real threats, Boston College and rival Florida State look to be on the come up, plus nonconference archrival South Carolina is on the rise as well. This team will go as far as former 5-star recruit DJ Uiagalelei takes it. If he can show the promise he did during his two starts back in 2020, the Tigers could find themselves back in the playoff, but if he plays like he did last year, an 8-win season may be a generous prediction, or Dabo may once again call an audible, and replace him with current 5-star Cade Klubnik. UCLA looks to finally be moving forward after years in the middle of the PAC12. Head Coach Chip Kelly barely avoided being fired after his third year, winning just a third of his games, but the program took a massive step forward last year, going 8-4. QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson was able to break out as the true starter, and showed poise in the pocket while also bringing a speedy run game to the offense. The PAC12 South is certainly deeper than the North, with a much improved USC squad, along with reigning conference champion, Utah. Luckily for the Bruins, they host both of these teams at home, but must face off against the Ducks in Eugene. If UCLA can take down division foes, USC and Utah, they could hold the ever important tie breaker and set up a potential rematch game against Oregon on championship weekend.

Florida State (10-2) vs Texas A&M (8-4)
As stated before, the bowl selection committee loves a flare for the dramatic. While this may not be as fresh of a memory as Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma, there isn’t much love lost between current A&M Head Coach, and former national champion HC at FSU, Jimbo Fisher and the Seminole faithful. Fisher’s unexpected departure during the 2017 season left FSU spiraling to replace him, with his successor, Willie Taggart failing to do anything in his less than two years at the helm. Mike Norvell took over in 2020 and the team has yet to have a winning season under him, but has shown tremendous signs of growth, particularly in the second half of last year. The Noles took down North Carolina on the road along with rival Miami at home, plus close losses to rivals Clemson and Florida, both on the road. FSU luckily gets to face many of their toughest opponents at home, but must travel to South Florida to play Miami and New Orleans against a rebuilding LSU, in the first game of the Brian Kelly era, both of which will be opportunities to make a statement and bring back wins and a piece of sod to Tallahassee. For Coach Fisher, he looks to finally lead his team to a double digit win season. While a 34-14 record is nothing to be ashamed of, Aggie fans are looking to take the next step and Fisher would like to drop the “Mr. 8-4” nickname. The problem is they are stuck in the hardest division in college football, with teams like Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and more standing in their way.

Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl

San Diego State (9-3) vs Kent State (8-5)
Another bowl game that will return after being canceled due to COVID, the Arizona Bowl will have a unique look this year for viewers. Most notably, the broadcast will be featured exclusively on the infamous Barstool Sports, so no one knows what they could have up their sleeve for their first ever live college football broadcast. San Diego State is coming off one of their best seasons in school history, thanks to the familiar name, Brady Hoke. The Aztecs will have to go up against a strong Fresno State team, along with Utah and Boise State, but they should be able to continue building on the foundation that led them to a division title and 12 wins last year. Kent State is one of the top teams in the MAC, even with the loss of QB Dustin Crum. Head Coach Sean Lewis has elevated the program to a point that he has become rumored as one of the next MAC coaches to get a Power 5 offer. Kent is one of the favorites in the MAC East and has a great chance to return to Detroit on championship weekend.

Iowa (8-4) vs Arkansas (8-4)
Kirk Ferentz is the longest tenured head coach in the nation, and there’s a reason why. The Hawkeyes have made a bowl game 19 of the past 21 years, along with 2 division titles and 2 Big 10 championships. It feels like Iowa has always been a great quarterback away from being a true national contender, like when CJ Beatherd was one drive away from leading Iowa to the CFP. Spencer Petras is not that guy, but has proven to be enough to win the games over lesser opponents and an occasional upset. Iowa will be led by their dominant offensive line, and will have to face off against teams like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio State. It’s been just three years since Arkansas went 2-10 in back-to-back seasons under Chad Morris, but Sam Pittman turned on the jukebox in Fayetteville. KJ Jefferson was a stud at QB for the Razorbacks, leading them to trophy game wins over LSU, Missouri and Texas A&M along with winning Outback Bowl MVP. He will have to find a new top target now that WR Treylon Burks is in the NFL, but Oklahoma transfer Jadon Haselwood should be perfect to fit the role. The hogs are on the come up, and will look to compete with the top teams in the SEC this year.

ReliaQuest Bowl

Minnesota (10-3) vs South Carolina (8-4)
For those who may be confused, this is what was formerly known as the Outback Bowl. The game will still be on New Year’s Day with a massive pirate ship in the stadium, but will no longer feature a battle for Outback appetizers. Minnesota will be led by Head Coach PJ Fleck, who enters his sixth year at the helm. Minnesota had a lot of promise last season but RB Mohamed Ibrahim tore his ACL in the season opener and the offense just wasn’t the same. QB Tanner Morgan struggled on and off last year and will need to be more consistent this year. The Golden Gophers will have a real chance in a mediocre Big 10 West Division and could find themselves as a division champ. South Carolina was a hot and cold team last year, in Head Coach Shane Beamer’s first year in Columbia. Beamer ended his season with a Duke’s Mayo bath and spent the offseason recruiting hard, especially in the transfer portal. Beamer will look to resurrect the career of former 5-star QB Spencer Rattler, among other transfers. Even in the SEC East, the Gamecocks will have a loaded schedule and plenty of challenging opponents this season, but there is plenty of optimism for Gamecock fans in 2022.

Michigan State (10-2) vs Kentucky (9-3)
Year after year, the Citrus Bowl often features two of the top teams to narrowly miss the New Years 6. This year is no different, with Michigan State and Kentucky. Mel Tucker was somewhat of a surprise hire from Colorado a couple years back and a rough first year only added to the doubters. But 2021 was a complete opposite. After starting the season unranked, with Sparty winning 11 games, beating rival Michigan, a Peach Bowl victory, and finishing in the top 10 rankings. It was enough for MSU to extend Tucker for 10 years, with one of the richest contracts nationwide. Tucker followed it up by bringing over a slew of transfers from coast to coast with the hopes of capturing their first conference championship since 2015. Michigan State is still a step behind Ohio State and must travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines. Mark Stoops has done a great job as coach at what many think of as a basketball school. The Wildcats have won four straight bowl games and six straight appearances, both school records. The team is led by a true dark horse QB in Will Levis, who is looking at a first round draft selection this upcoming April. They may not be on the same level as Georgia in the division, but can certainly make some noise this year.

Virginia (9-3) vs Oregon (10-2)
At the end of last season, Bronco Mendenhall somewhat surprisingly resigned as head coach. That led to former Clemson OC Tony Elliott coming to Charlottesville to take his place and lead the Cavaliers. Elliot quickly made a major splash by bringing on DC John Rudzinski from Air Force, who led the Falcons to back to back top 10 defensive seasons. The Cavaliers will be led for one final season by All-ACC QB Brennan Armstrong, who will look to build on his draft stock in his fifth year. Oregon also enters a new era, as Mario Cristobal left the Pacific Northwest for South Florida and took the Miami job. Dan Lanning takes over and looks to bring the same defensive presence that he had at Georgia when they won multiple New Years 6 bowls and a national championship. The Ducks also brought in Bo Nix from Oregon, but lost its top two running backs, along with a handful of other transfers. The PAC12 North is a very weak division, and Oregon is likely the top team, even with the pieces they lost this offseason.

NC State (12-1) vs Notre Dame (11-1)
This may finally be the year for both of these teams to do something they haven’t done in a long time. NC State is looking for its first ACC Championship since 1979, while Notre Dame is looking for its first major bowl victory since 1994. NC State is led by 10th year head coach, Dave Doeren, who has won 17 games over the past two seasons. Doeren has led the Wolfpack to seven bowl selections so far in his tenure and last year beat Clemson for the first time 2011. QB Devin Leary had a fantastic season last year, completing 65% of his passes for 3,400 yards and 35 touchdowns. The Wolfpack look like they may be the team to beat in the ACC and have plenty of momentum heading into this season. For Notre Dame, they are led by Marcus Freeman as they enter the first year without Brian Kelly, after he and his fam-uh-lay left South Bend for the Bayou back in December. Freeman has struck gold so far on the recruiting trail and landed all-american S Brandon Joseph on the transfer portal. Tyler Buchner will take over full-time under center after being stuck behind Jack Coan last year. Freeman will look to finally take Notre Dame to the level Kelly couldn’t, and he has an opportunity to put the team in the national attention right off the bat with a game against Ohio State week 1.

Oklahoma State (11-2) vs Ole Miss (11-1)
Oklahoma State had a great season last year and came inches away from a playoff spot after a heartbreaking finish to the Big 12 championship. They returned the heartbreak in their bowl game, mounting a massive comeback against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. The strength of the Pokes was their defense, but DC Jim Knowles left Stillwater for Columbus to take the same job at Ohio State. QB Spencer Sanders was good at times last year, but needs to take a step forward this year for Oklahoma State to have a shot at the playoff. Ole Miss should be a fun team to watch this year, with the Lane Train rolling on down in Oxford. Transfer Jaxon Dart will take over for Matt Corral. Kiffin will once again have a high powered offense, and he will be sure to bring the theatrics on whatever field he coaches.

UCF (12-1) vs Pittsburgh (11-2)
Many think that Pitt will take a step back after the losses of QB Kenny Pickett to the NFL and WR Jordan Addison to USC, but Pat Narduzzi was able to bring in QB Kedon Slovis from USC and WR Konata Mumpfield. Pitt also has the benefit of an easy conference schedule this season, which should help. Their toughest test will come week 1 in the Backyard Brawl, plus whoever they likely end up playing in the ACC Championship. UCF gets the Cotton Bowl nod as the top team in the group of five and AAC champs. The Gus Bus should roll on down in Orlando this year. Malzahn landed multiple receivers in the portal, and was able to hang on to QB John Rhys Plumless, who will take over as the starter for Dillon Gabriel. Outside of a home matchup against Louisville, the Knights have a very simple schedule this year, and it seems inevitable for them to win at least double digit games.

The Rose Bowl Game presented by Capital One Venture X
Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California
Utah (11-2) vs Michigan (10-2)
Utah was moments away from winning their first ever Rose Bowl back on New Years, but simply could not overcome a furious Buckeye team without starting QB, Cam Rising. Rising is back and ready to lead the Utes back to the Rose Bowl or even the CFP. They will face a tough challenge on the road week 1 as they travel to the swamp to take on Florida, plus matchups against UCLA, USC, and Oregon. Star LB Devin Lloyd is gone, but transfer Mohamoud Diabate will look to fill his shoes. Kyle Wittingham has a great squad this year and will look to finish the job this year and capitalize on a chance to make school history. Last year for Michigan was a true sight for sore eyes. The Wolverines finally beat Ohio State. The Wolverines finally won the Big 10. The Wolverines finally made the College Football Playoff. Michigan is riding high coming into this season, but that doesn’t mean they are automatically the conference favorites. They will certainly have a target on their back, especially from their neighbors to the south. Jim Harbaugh will have to replace a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball, with Aiden Hutchinson, David Ojabo, and Daxton Hill being drafted, plus stud running back Hassan Haskins going pro as well. There are certainly recruits coming in that could one day reach the level of the aforementioned but it could take time. QB Cade McNamara was a solid QB and it feels like he still has a higher ceiling he can reach, along with RB Blake Corum ready to break out as the feature back. This Michigan team certainly has plenty of talent, but whether they are on the same level as their archrival Ohio State is a question that has to be asked.

4 Baylor (13-0) vs 1 Alabama (13-0)
Alabama is simply the best team in the country, there’s no getting around that. Nick Saban claims last year was a rebuilding year, and yet they were a quarter away from yet another national title. If that’s a rebuilding year, then the sky’s the limit for this year’s Crimson Tide team. They are led on offense by reigning Heisman winner and projected top 5 pick QB Bryce Young and on defense by another projected top 5 pick LB Will Anderson. Both of these men could go on and win the Heisman this year, especially thanks to a loaded supporting cast. Alabama will be favored in every game they play and there’s simply no reason to doubt they will once again be in the college football playoff yet again, potentially undefeated. For Baylor, they are an under the radar playoff team, but not someone to overlook. Dave Aranda won just 2 games in his 2020 debut season, just to turn around and win 12 games, a thrilling Big 12 championship, and the Sugar Bowl in 2021. QB Gerry Bohanan wasn’t anything special last year, but he made smart decisions and helped put his team in positions to score. Add that with a hard-nosed defense and you have a winning formula. The defense lost a lot to the draft, but the addition of Jaxon Player to the defensive line will be a major addition. Aranda will look to run it back in 2022, but the rest of the Big 12 will give them their best shot week in and week out.

3 Georgia (12-1) vs 2 Ohio State (13-0)
Is there any team in the country coming back with a bigger vengeance than Ohio State? After losing their most important game to “The Team Up North,” Ryan Day and the Buckeyes found themselves on the outside looking in for the playoff. It was the first time since 2016 that the Buckeyes did not win the Big 10 and first year since 2018 they didn’t go to the CFP. Perhaps Day came back down to Earth a bit after all the preseason talk, but this team is absolutely loaded and should find themselves right back where they want to be when the committee announces the playoff field. Their toughest tests come in game 1 and game 12 against Notre Dame and Michigan, but both games are in the horseshoe. The defense last year was a major liability, so Day went out and brought in Oklahoma State DC Jim Knowles, who coached a top 5 defense last year, to take over as DC. The offense lost star receivers Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, plus both offensive tackles, but is led by a trio of true Heisman contenders this year in QB CJ Stroud, RB TreVeyon Henderson, and WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. While a Rose Bowl victory is certainly nice, it’s national championship or bust down in Columbus, but this team has the tools to reach that goal and win the whole thing. Georgia finally did it, beating Alabama and breaking their long championship drought. They also broke the modern NFL draft record for the most draft picks from a school in a single draft with 15, including 5 picks on day 1. This asks the serious question of if Coach Kirby Smart can retool his defense that lost 8 starters, plus DC Dan Lanning. Even with all that was lost on defense, the Dawgs still have 2 potential top 10 draft picks in Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith anchoring their DLine. On offense, the top 2 backs, James Cook and Zamir White both left for the draft and star receiver George Pickens. There is plenty to replace, but the Dawgs have recruited at the top level the past few years and hold a massive advantage over teams visiting their home stadium between the hedges, which leads many to believe they can find themselves sitting in a playoff spot once again, even with a loss in the SEC championship to the Crimson Tide.

2 Ohio State (14-0) vs 1 Alabama (14-0)
This could be one of the most electric matchups we have ever seen in the playoff and while many fans nationwide may grimace at these two teams, the talent on the field would be exceptional. The QB matchup of Heisman winner Bryce Young vs Heisman finalist CJ Stroud. OSU wideout JSN vs Bama CB Eli Ricks. Buckeye OT Paris Johnson Jr. vs Crimson Tide Edge Rusher Will Anderson. And the list goes on and on and on. Nick Saban has been here so many times that it’s like muscle memory, and Ryan Day is looking to cement himself in a legendary list of Buckeye coaches to win a national championship. A matchup like this doesn’t happen every year, but this could be a game remembered for a long, long time, especially with all the projected first round picks between the two schools.

Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl
