Zips to Close 2026 Spring Football Game to Public

April 8, 2026
The University of Akron football program announced today that its upcoming Spring Game, scheduled for Saturday, April 25, will be closed to the public and media.
The decision marks a private conclusion to the Zips’ spring practice slate, which began on March 17. Team officials cited the “ever-changing landscape of college football” and the need to integrate a significantly overhauled roster as the primary drivers behind the move.
While fans won’t get a first look at the squad this April, there is plenty of momentum behind Joe Moorhead’s program. The announcement comes on the heels of the NCAA officially lifting previous practice hour restrictions and postseason bans that had been tied to the program’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. With those hurdles cleared, the Zips are fully bowl-eligible for the 2026 season.
The Zips have spent the last month grinding through 15 closed practice sessions at the Stile Athletics Field House, focusing on chemistry and depth following a busy transfer portal cycle.
Fans won’t have to wait long to see the new-look Zips in person, however. Akron officially kicks off the 2026 regular season at InfoCision Stadium on September 3 when they host Wake Forest.
Season tickets for the 2026 campaign are on sale now through the Akron Athletics Ticket Office.
