GROVE CITY, Ohio — 3News and its sister station 10TV in Columbus have confirmed more than a dozen Glenville High School football players are accused of stealing over $4,500 worth of merchandise from a Dick's Sporting Goods store Thursday evening in Grove City.
According to a press release from the Grove City Police Department, about 15-20 teens were at the Dick's on Stringtown Road sometime before 7:30 p.m. when they stole the items. Employees called law enforcement and shared their belief that the suspects were members of the Glenville football team, which is in the Columbus area this week for a game against Olentangy Liberty.
Authorities said they spoke with Tarblooder coaches at a nearby hotel where the team was staying, and that those staffers cooperated. "Some of the merchandise" has since been returned to Dick's, but the investigation remains ongoing.
A spokesperson for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District told 3News via email that the district is aware of the allegations against the Glenville players and is "gathering information."
"We expect our scholars to behave appropriately and if that didn’t happen, we will take the appropriate next steps," the spokesperson said.
Glenville, the defending OHSAA Division IV state champion, wound up beating Liberty 34-13 Friday night. It is not known if any of the players accused of being involved saw action in the game. Olentangy's athletic director declined comment to 10TV.
